JAH WOBBLE - BASSIST, POET, PAINTER, BROADCASTER - ANNOUNCES INTIMATE Q&A TOUR The Old Woollen is delighted to announce an evening with Jah Wobble, in a rare and intimate Q&A setting Across more than four decades, Jah Wobble (born John Wardle) has built one of the most restless and wide-ranging bodies of work in British music. Since forming Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart in 1982, he has fused dub, jazz, funk and folk with Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Celtic musical traditions across dozens of albums - including the Mercury Prize-nominated Rising Above Bedlam (1991), which featured Sinéad O'Connor, and Celtic Poets, which set verse (including a poem by The Pogues' Shane MacGowan) to Eastern-tinged jazz. He collaborated with Can's Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit, U2's The Edge, Brian Eno - including a full album built around William Blake's poetry - and, more recently, Bill Laswell. Wobble is as much a writer and visual artist as a musician. He published a book of his own poetry, Odds & Sods & Epilogues, in 2013, spent years as a book reviewer for the Independent on Sunday and The Times, and continues to paint - selling original work alongside his music. A committed Buddhist since his mid-thirties, following an earlier Catholic upbringing, his records are shot through with spiritual and philosophical themes, something reflected in the psycho-geographic wanderings of albums like The Bus Routes of South London and Thames Symphony, both inspired by walking the city he grew up in. He holds a BA in Music and Philosophy, runs his own label, 30 Hertz Records, and has been a fixture on BBC Radio 5 Live since 2013. Rather than performing with a band, this show puts Wobble himself centre stage for a night of stories, opinions and audience questions - his musical journey through Invaders of the Heart and beyond, poetry and painting, faith and philosophy, sobriety, and his famously sharp, funny, straight-talking take on music and life.
