Akhtari Faizabadi or Begum Akhtar was a renowned ghazal singer of both India and Pakistan. She was born on 7 October 1914 at Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh, India and died on 30 October 1974 at age 60. She had a uniquely melodious voice for singing ghazals and semi-classical songs in both Urdu and Hindi languages. She was fond of singing from her early childhood and this was noticed by her immediate family and relatives. She was tutored by many classical musicians of her time including Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan of Lahore, Pakistan. After she became famous for singing ghazals, she also became a film actress in the 1940s and acted in a few films. But she is mainly known for her Urdu ghazal singing and received many top awards both in India and Pakistan.
