Madison Avenue

About Madison Avenue

Duo Madison Avenue became, with one release ("Don't Call Me Baby"), the first dance act to top the Australian charts and the first Australian dance act to top the U.K. charts. Madison Avenue is Andy Van (producer/writer) and Cheyne Coates (singer/lyricist). Andy Van was previously known as a high-profile Melbourne DJ and producer and co-owner of Vicious Vinyl records, a label specializing in creating and distributing dance/house releases. Van was also in demand as a remixer (Tina Arena, CDB) and won an ARIA (Australia's Grammys) for his work on "Coma" by Pendulum. Coates is a trained dancer. The couple met in a nightclub. Their initial release as Madison Avenue, "Don't Call Me Baby," a catch cry that obviously hit a chord with females around the world, reached the number one position in Australia in January 2000 and repeated the feat in England in May. In June, the follow-up, "Who the Hell Are You," was also an Australian number one single. The full-length Polyester Embassy was released in November 2000. ~ Ed Nimmervoll
