Essential Albums
- Following two well-received EPs, Lush released Gala, the gorgeous full-length that turned them into one of the most beloved British bands of their era. In both sound and title, “Sweetness and Light” is emblematic of their aesthetic. While My Bloody Valentine offered typhoons of guitar that crashed over listeners with majestic fury, Lush lifted up their listeners into a cumulus cloud of soft-hued moisture. They weren’t as ethereal as they were made out to be—as proven by the restless hit “De-Luxe”—but they found ways to be soothing without ever becoming lethargic.

About Lush
Meshing dreamy, feedback-drenched guitars with airy, catchy melodies, Lush were one of the most prominent shoegaze bands of the early '90s. Led by guitarists Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson, the British band earned a cult following with its first EPs, yet the group never quite attained the critical respect given to peers My Bloody Valentine and Ride. Even so, Lush lasted longer than most of their contemporaries by developing sharp pop skills. By Lovelife (1996), they had converted themselves into a power pop band with dream pop overtones, which resulted in the greatest chart success of their career. The suicide of drummer Chris Acland brought Lush to its end, but the surviving members re-formed two decades later.
