Indie legends Mighty Mighty are making their first Birmingham city centre appearance since 1988. The gig marks 40 years since the band featured on the highly influential NME compilation album C86, which is widely recognised as ground zero for UK indie music. Forming in Birmingham in 1983, they quickly built a reputation for their high energy live performances and sharp, intelligent pop songs. In the true DIY spirit of the time, in 1985 they self-released the single Everybody Knows The Monkey. This came to the attention of John Peel and they subsequently recorded three sessions at the BBC Maida Vale studios for his show, as well as one for Janis Long. They released a further single on their own Girlie Records label before signing to Chapter 22 Records. "Responsible for the beguiling debut single "Everybody Knows The Monkey", they have now unleashed a summer song of anthemic proportions in the sparkling "Is There Anyone Out There?" (Adrian Thrills, NME). Four further singles and an album, 'Sharks', were released by Chapter 22. "'Sharks' is 12 songs of fine quality with which the band assert their musical maturity and depth as songwriters." (Freddie Fareham, Record Mirror). Mighty Mighty made regular appearances in the Indie Charts and Is There Anyone Out There was included in John Peel's 1986 Festive 50. They extensively toured the UK in 1987 and 1988. "Mighty Mighty are undoubtably the best live band in Britain today and deserve to be huge in '88". (Simon Dine, Record Mirror). The band initially called it a day in 1988, but have since gigged regularly, locally at venues such as the Hare and Hounds, as well as London's 100 Club and Berlin Popfest. In 2000, in response to a growing and enthusiastic fanbase in Japan, three compilations of Mighty Mighty songs were released on the Vinyl Japan label, including a collection of all their BBC Radio One sessions. In 2012 the demos that had been recorded in 1988 for the planned second album were released by the Berlin label Firestation. A comprehensive compilation of Mighty Mighty's back catalogue - 'Pop Can' - was released by Cherry Red Records in 2013. The band produced new material for the first time in over 30 years on the album 'Misheard Love Songs', released in 2019. "A positively vibrant and engaging record, with the rich and soulful voice of Hugh McGuiness, this is a giant leap forward that is still steeped in history and nostalgia." (Azra Pathan, Original Rock.net) As well as having a loyal UK fanbase, Mighty Mighty remain very popular in East Asia and South America. Their songs have recently been covered by young Indonesian bands. Mighty Mighty will be joined at the Victoria by young local acts Pylon and Frankling.
